From the moment Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf coaches first saw Malan Potgieter, they believed they were watching a future professional golfer. Over four years in Lafayette, the South African standout transformed from a promising international recruit into one of the greatest players in program history, and now, he’s beginning to earn recognition on the global amateur golf stage.

Potgieter arrived at UL from Kirkwood, South Africa, already carrying a strong international résumé. Before stepping onto campus, he was ranked among the top junior golfers in South Africa and had represented his country in international competition.   But few could have predicted just how quickly he would leave his mark on Cajuns golf.

As a freshman in the 2022-23 season, Potgieter immediately became Louisiana’s top scorer, posting a 72.31 scoring average while competing in all 15 events. He earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Freshman of the Year honors and second-team All-Sun Belt recognition after recording four top-10 finishes and helping elevate the Cajuns program nationally.

His sophomore and junior seasons showed continued growth. Potgieter consistently delivered low rounds, piled up top-20 finishes, and became one of the most reliable golfers in the Sun Belt Conference. By the time he reached his senior year, he had evolved into the face of UL golf and one of the best collegiate players in the country.

The defining moment of his Louisiana career came at the historic Louisiana Classics tournament at Oakbourne Country Club. In 2025, Potgieter became the first Ragin’ Cajun golfer ever to win the prestigious event individually. Then, in 2026, he made history again by becoming the first golfer in the tournament’s 41-year history to win the Louisiana Classics in back-to-back seasons.

His performance during the 2026 tournament was dominant. Potgieter fired rounds of 65, 67, and 69 to finish at 15-under par, leading the field in par-4 scoring and recording a tournament-best 20 birdies.   Cajuns head coach Theo Sliman praised both his talent and maturity, calling him “a professional golfer playing in a college field.”

Potgieter’s senior campaign turned into one of the finest individual seasons ever recorded at UL. He posted a remarkable 69.67 stroke average, set school-level standards for consistency, and compiled six top-three finishes during the year.   His elite play earned him First-Team All-Sun Belt honors and national attention from across the collegiate golf world.

That attention reached another level this monthwhen Potgieter was selected to compete in the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup, the collegiate equivalent of the Ryder Cup. He became the first golfer in Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns history selected for the international showcase.

The Palmer Cup selection placed Potgieter alongside many of the world’s top amateur golfers and further validated what Louisiana coaches and fans had witnessed for years: a player capable of competing on golf’s biggest stages. The event has featured future stars such as Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, and Collin Morikawa.

Potgieter’s rise also highlights the growing reputation of Louisiana’s golf program. Under legendary coach Bob Bass and current coach Theo Sliman, the Cajuns have developed a reputation for identifying international talent and producing elite competitors. Potgieter may ultimately stand as the program’s greatest example yet.

Now, as his collegiate career winds down, the next step appears obvious. With his combination of power, consistency, and mental toughness, Potgieter looks poised to pursue professional golf full-time. Whether on developmental tours or eventually the PGA Tour, his time at UL has laid the foundation for a career that may just be getting started.

For Louisiana fans, his legacy is already secure: a history-making champion, a record-setter, and one of the finest golfers ever to wear the Vermilion and White.
