As we pass the midpoint of the 2025 season, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team finds itself in a perplexing position. With a current record of 17-22 overall and 8-7 in Sun Belt Conference play , the team has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled to maintain consistency. This inconsistency raises questions about the team’s direction and, more pointedly, about some of Head Coach Matt Deggs’ lineup decisions.

A Season of Highs and Lows

The season began with promise. The Cajuns opened with a solid 7-2 win over San Jose State but then dropped the next two games of the series. They managed to take two out of three games against a ranked Nebraska team, showcasing their potential . However, subsequent series against UC Irvine and Dallas Baptist exposed vulnerabilities, with the team going 1-5 in those two series’.

Conference play has been a mixed bag. The Cajuns secured a series sweep against James Madison and series win against South Alabama but went 1-2 against Texas State at home. The recent series against ULM resulted in another disappointing 1-2 outcome, further highlighting the team’s struggle to find its footing.

Lineup Decisions Under Scrutiny

One of the most puzzling aspects of this season has been Coach Deggs’ lineup choices. The roster boasts a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers. Yet, there seems to be a reluctance to fully integrate the younger talent into the starting lineup.

For instance, freshman outfielder Mark Collins, known for his speed and defensive prowess, has seen limited action despite the team’s need for outfield stability. Similarly, infielder Griffin Hebert, who impressed during preseason, has not been given consistent opportunities to contribute. Carson Hepworth, who proved himself as a key piece of the puzzle both offensively and defensively, often finds himself watching from the dugout as well.

This approach to the lineup selection may be hindering the team’s ability to adapt and inject fresh energy into games. In a season where consistency is lacking, exploring different player combinations could also provide the spark needed to turn things around.

Where Do We Go From Here?

With the season progressing, the Cajuns must address these issues promptly. Embracing the depth of the roster and giving younger players a chance to prove themselves could lead to improved performance. Additionally, reevaluating strategic decisions and being more adaptable in-game could help the team navigate the challenges ahead.

The talent is present; it’s a matter of harnessing it effectively. As the Cajuns prepare for upcoming series against ODU, the hope is that adjustments will be made to capitalize on the full potential of the team. The season is far from over, and with the right moves, there’s still an opportunity to finish the regular season strong.
