The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns rode a steady offensive performance and solid pitching to a 9-3 victory over in-state rival ULM Friday night at Lou St. Amant Field. The win improved Louisiana’s record to 17-20 overall and 8-5 in Sun Belt play, while the Warhawks dropped to 16-19 and 3-10 in conference.

Conor Higgs headlined the Cajuns’ 12-hit night, launching his 12th home run of the season in the third inning — a two-run blast that traveled 367 feet — as Louisiana built a lead it never relinquished.

Louisiana trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but responded with two runs in both the second and third innings. Lee Amedee had a stellar night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a double, while Griffin Hebert and Caleb Stelly each contributed key hits and combined for three RBIs of their own. Stelly added his eighth double of the year and a stolen base, part of a 5-steal night for the Cajuns.

Starting pitcher Chase Morgan earned the win (3-1), tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Matthew Holzhammer was lights-out in relief, picking up the save with four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Defensively, Louisiana was sharp, committing no errors and turning a double play. ULM, on the other hand, struggled with two costly errors and several missed opportunities, stranding 10 runners on base.

Bryce Blaser was the lone bright spot for the Warhawks, driving in two runs in the fifth inning to briefly bring ULM within reach, but the Cajuns added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game out of reach.

Louisiana now looks to clinch the series on Saturday, while ULM will try to bounce back and avoid another Sun Belt setback.
