LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns secured a series victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down Georgia Southern 7-3 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. With the win, Louisiana improved to 22-23 overall and 12-8 in Sun Belt Conference play, positioning themselves firmly in the top tier of the standings as they chase postseason seeding. The Cajuns will now look to complete the sweep on Sunday.
Louisiana wasted no time jumping on Georgia Southern starter Kade Grundy, plating four runs in the opening inning. Maddox Mandino led off the frame with a double to right field, and Drew Markle laid down a bunt single to set the table. Luke Yuhasz delivered an RBI double, and Conor Higgs followed with a two-run double of his own. Caleb Stelly added a sacrifice bunt, and Lee Amedee’s sacrifice fly capped off the early onslaught.
Conor Higgs continued his monster day by launching his 14th home run of the season in the sixth inning, a two-run blast that gave the Cajuns breathing room after Georgia Southern had briefly threatened. Higgs finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, continuing to swing one of the hottest bats in the conference.
Maddox Mandino (2-for-5), Luke Yuhasz (2-for-4, RBI, two runs), Jose Torres (2-for-3), and Owen Galt (2-for-3) all contributed multi-hit games for the Cajuns, helping Louisiana rack up 12 hits in the win.
On the mound, Tate Hess was sharp in relief, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs to improve to 5-2 on the season. Matthew Holzhammer closed the door in the ninth, picking up his fourth save of the year by stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout and a flyout to end the game.
Defensively, Louisiana was flawless, committing no errors and turning in several strong plays to keep Georgia Southern off balance. The Cajuns out-hit the Eagles 12-8 and showed excellent balance throughout the lineup.
With today's win, Louisiana is in fourth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings and keeps the pressure on the teams ahead of them with two weekends left in the regular season. The Cajuns will attempt to complete the sweep over Georgia Southern on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Central Time at "The Tigue."
