Bye Week Blues

Another Saturday in South Louisiana, and another fourth-quarter meltdown to a Sun Belt West rival by the Ragin’ Cajuns. This time, it was to one-win Southern Miss, who did not have an FBS win all season.

Just a couple weeks ago, the Cajuns fell in similar fashion to Louisiana Tech: on the road against a longtime rival with a double-digit lead late in the fourth quarter. The team is 5-3, but there is still an overwhelming feeling of “what if” from Cajun Nation heading into the bye week. The Cajuns theoretically could be 7-1, undefeated in conference and firmly in the driver’s seat for a Sun Belt Conference Championship. But after their second conference loss of the year, the Cajuns have now lost control of their own destiny.

To this point in the season, the Cajuns have relied on stellar defense and a solid rushing attack. Both of those elements were on full display last week against Troy, one of the premier teams in the Sun Belt over the last few years. The Cajuns dominated in all phases of the game and got the win.

But this week, Southern Miss gashed the Cajuns for 286 rushing yards and four touchdowns, averaging nearly seven yards every time it handed the ball off. Meanwhile, Louisiana managed just 118 yards on the ground. For a team that has leaned on its defense and rushing attack throughout the season, that imbalance is difficult to overcome. Mix in a second-half pick-six and a late game defensive collapse, and that’s how you lose to a one-win team. But the problems began well before the final minutes. “Consistency” has now become the buzzword for this 2026 football team.

So, what now? How will this team respond? At some point, a close loss stops being just a heartbreaking result and starts becoming a question of execution. When similar situations produce similar outcomes, the response must be more than simply moving on to the next game.

The Cajuns get a much-needed week off to regroup. They’ll heal up. They’ll hopefully do some serious soul searching. It doesn’t get easier. Another longtime rival waits after the by in South Alabama. The Jags are 4-3 and 2-1 in conference. The Cajuns should be favored to win. You could argue the Cajuns should be favored in all four of their games to close out the season. But as all sports fans across the world know, and especially Cajuns fans this season, games are never won on paper or on a betting app.

Games are won on the practice field, in the film room, in the weight room, in position meetings, and on a football field on Saturdays. It is a daily decision that is made by every coach and every player. Will you show up to work with a business-like mentality, with the sole purpose of getting just a little bit better? Or will you continue to do just enough to get by?

The bye week is here, and the Cajuns are officially at a crossroads. They could pack it in, settle for an average finish and another bowl appearance. Or, they could rise to the challenge, and raise the standard of Louisiana football. The Cajuns don’t need to prove that they can compete with the teams on their schedule, they’ve already done that. What they now need to prove is that they can sustain a high level of play for four quarters, and eliminate careless mistakes that have cost them games. Talent and potential can put a team in position to win, but preparation and execution determine whether it actually does.

This bye week offers an opportunity to reset, but what happens after will tell us about the character of this team – more than another week of talking about its potential ever could. 6-6 and 9-3 are both on the table. The real question is simple.

Will the Cajuns finally finish strong?
