The Cajuns Women's Soccer Team entered Thursday 0-8-0 all time against ranked teams. Texas State arrived 6-0-1, ranked 15th on the back of wins over Texas A&M and Baylor, and left with its first loss of the season.

Miku Kurihara hit it from 18 yards in the 16th minute and the biggest night in the history of Louisiana soccer was underway. Carson Glenn scored twice. Natalie Mayes made four saves. And a program that had never beaten a ranked team took down a Pac-12 side that hadn't lost all year.

How it happened

16' Kurihara, unassisted from 18 yards, her seventh goal of the season, most on the team. Louisiana 1-0.

17' Marivic Lek-Miro answers 63 seconds later from ten yards, set up by Helen Alormenu. Level at 1-1.

27' Glenn, right-footed from just inside the box, past Caitlyn Draper. Louisiana 2-1.

Those last 24 minutes are the part worth remembering. Texas State finished with eight corners to Louisiana's four and outshot the Cajuns 8-6 after the break, pouring balls into the box from every angle. Mayes came up with the stops that mattered. Everyone in front of her cleared, headed and disrupted until the whistle.

That is exactly the sequence this program has lost before. Not Thursday.

The turnaround is real, but it isn't the one you'd guess

Last season wasn't a disaster. That's what makes this interesting. The Cajuns went 7-6-5 in 2025 and 7-5-8 in 2024; competitive, hard to beat, and almost impossible to separate from. Thirteen draws in two years. The problem was never showing up. It was closing.

Three consecutive seven-win seasons. Eight matches into this one, Louisiana already has five.

The 2026 side has one draw in eight matches, and even that one was a comeback... down two goals at East Texas A&M before clawing back to 3-3. The wins haven't been narrow either: 4-1 at Southeastern Louisiana, 4-1 over Northwestern State, 2-0 over Nicholls, 4-1 at McNeese. Four victories in August set a program record for the month.

Even the two losses say something. Ole Miss beat them 2-1. Mississippi State, unbeaten at the time, beat them 2-1. Louisiana is no longer getting run off the field by SEC programs, it's losing to them by a goal and then taking the lesson to the next one.

What McBride built

The Scot is in his fifth season in Lafayette, and the arc is clean. He inherited a 3-9-5 team in 2022. By 2024 he'd coached Louisiana to the best winning percentage in school history at .550, the fewest losses in a season with five, and the stingiest defense the program has ever had at 1.10 goals against. That was also the year Mayes set the single-season shutout record with seven.

The culture piece shows up in the schedule. Louisiana didn't stumble into Ole Miss, Mississippi State and a ranked Texas State, McBride books those matches on purpose, and he says so plainly: the point is to play the best teams and be ready when conference play starts. After the Bobcats went down, he framed Thursday as the test of whether his group could actually apply what the SEC losses had taught them. They'd been creating chances all month. What they needed was to be clinical against a top side.

They took 13 shots, put six on frame, and scored three. That's clinical.‍

"Miko and Carson were phenomenal tonight," McBride said in his postgame comments, and then immediately started talking about what Texas State's service into the box exposed.

That second half is the tell. A coach whose program just made history spent his postgame explaining what the defense needs to fix. Culture isn't the celebration. It's what you're already working on before the celebration ends.

Seven goals in eight matches, team-leading, and 13 in her career. A preseason All-Sun Belt pick who is now the player opponents have to plan around. The goal against Texas State was hers alone from 18 yards; the assist on Glenn's second was the more impressive act — a through ball that turned a 2-1 grind into a 3-1 cushion in one touch.

Carson Glenn FWD · 33

Five shots, three on goal, two goals on the biggest night the program has had. Also a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, and the player who scored against Texas State in last year's 1-1 conference draw. She's now the finisher this team has spent years looking for.

Natalie Mayes GK · 0

Four saves Thursday, several of them during the Bobcats' final push. She already owns the program record for career shutouts at 13 and the single-season record at seven. In a league that gets decided by one-goal matches, she's the reason Louisiana keeps being in them.

The supporting cast

Six different players have scored their first career goal this season. Addison Soehn and Salma Elhaimer both got shots off against Texas State; Maria Reyes and Maiya Clark have been in the middle of the good nights all month. A team that used to draw 1-1 because it had one source of goals now has several, which is precisely why the draws are disappearing.

Louisiana closes non-conference play Tuesday at Southern before Coastal Carolina comes to the Home Bank complex on September 20 to open the Sun Belt. The conference schedule is where the last three seasons went sideways... 2-4-4 in 2024, 4-3-3 in 2025, always close, never quite over the line.

This group is different. It has a goalscorer, a creator, a record-setting keeper, depth that scores from everywhere, and now something no Ragin' Cajuns soccer team has ever had: proof that it can beat someone ranked.

Twenty-six years and eight tries to get the first one. The ninth took 90 minutes.
